東京都新宿区中井「林芙美子記念館」探訪

2023年は作家、林芙美子(1903-1951)生誕120年にあたる。
「―旅人で、詩人で、傑作書きで―」と称せられる芙美子は、47歳で没するまでの10年間（昭和16年～26年/ 1941-1951)を家族と共にこの中井（旧名「落合」の家で暮らした。新宿区とはいえ、記念館として保存される芙美子の家は今も閑静な住宅地にある。作家が精魂傾けて造った家は創作の現場としてだけではなく、昭和の時を色濃く残す個人住宅として、個性的な建造物として、庭と共にこの土地の貴重な一角をなしている。

2023 marks the 120th anniversary since Hayashi Fumiko (1903-1951 was born. She is recognized as "a traveler, a poet, and a masterpiece writer." Her residence is located in a qiet quarter of Nakai (once called Ochiai) in Shinjyuku Wardk, Tokyo. Fumiko's estate is reserved as a museum, known as a characteristic residence, architecture with a rich garden.

ほぼ同時代に生きたイギリスの作家Virginia Woolf(1882-1941)は女性が物書きになるためには、食うに困らぬ収入と「自分だけの部屋」が必要だと作品に書いている。彼女以前の女性作家たちが家族の目を盗んで、台所の片隅で密かに物を書くしかなかった境遇を憂いてのことである。その主張から見ると、芙美子が様々な苦労を経たのちにかくも見事な邸宅を自力で建てたことは、賞賛に値する。女性史の視点からも芙美子は後の世代に大きな影響を与える存在といえよう。執筆も生活も大切にしようとする女性の感性と知性と、そして経済力が創造した場所を見てきた。

A woman built the house by her creative writing work

A British author who lived almost the same age with Fumiko, Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) wrote in A Room of One’s own: "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction". She deplored the status of her precedent female writers who had to stealthily write at a table in the kitchen. From her point of view, Fumiko should be praised for her independence to build such a spacious residence after her long-lasting poverty and toils. In spite of the various praise or censure, Fumiko influenced greatly to her followers. Her invaluable sense and sensibility in the details of her life as well as her final success in financial background, this museum presents us quite informative legacy of the writer.

西武新宿線「中井」駅から徒歩10分足らずのところにある
記念館へは、右折して「四の坂」を上る。

Fumiko's residence is in 10-minute walk from Nakai,
a local railway station of the Seibu Shinjyuku Line.
Turn right at the entrance into "the Fourth Slope."

林芙美子邸の門。記念館への入り口はこの先。

「四の坂」の先に、もう一つ階段がある。記念館は高台と
崖下の真ん中に位置する。

There are steps up to the summit of the height.
Fumiko Museum is in the middle of the slope.

「新宿区中井二丁目」の住所表記。以前は「落合」と呼ばれて
いた場所。記念館入口。

The address of this place is 2 Nakai, Shinjyuku Ward.
It was the place once called Ochiai. The entrance to
the museum.

記念館への入場料を払う「受け付け」。芙美子関連の資料や
僅かな作品も取り扱っている。

The reception of the museum. They sell some
materials related to Fumiko, including a few
of her works.

この庭には何体かの石仏が配されている。この石仏の上方は崖線
沿いの植栽が見られる庭園の一部となっている。

There are some stone Buddhist images in the garden.
Behind of this stone you can explore enjoying garden
plants along the cliff line.

芙美子の台所。現在の目から見るといかにも素朴だが、合理的
な配置で、料理好きだったという芙美子自慢の台所に違いない。

Fumiko's kitchen. It is unsophisticated from our idea
of the kitchen today; yet, it is made very well for her.
She liked cooking and took good care of her life in details.

ひときわ目を引く真っ白な冷蔵庫。おそらく大きく切り出した氷の塊
を入れて中のものを冷やす仕組みになっていたのではないか。残念
ながら、台所の中には入れない。

A brilliant white ice box. I guess it is not an electric appliance,
but the one to cool food with a large block of ice. Unfortunately
visitors are not allowed to go indoors.

好みの布を張った置き型の押し入れと、火鉢や香炉の
並ぶ「次の間」。部屋と部屋の間はふすまで区切るのが日本
家屋の通例だったので、開け放てば広い空間となる。

A closed covered with Fumiko's favorite cloth pasted
on the surface. It is called "a room next to the bed room."
In a Japanese traditional house, individual rooms were separated
with sliding doors; if they are all opened, they were able to get a spacious room as a whole.

右手のアトリエ棟と左手の居住空間
の間の中庭を抜けた先にある樹木（石榴？）。

A tree of pomegranate (?) planted in a narrow lot in between
the atelier and the living space.

八畳ほどの座敷（寝室）。掛け軸のある床の間と、茶道具の入った棚が
ゆかしい。

A tatami room (for a bed room) with 8 tatami mats.
There is an alcove with a hanging scroll, and a cupboard
on which is a box for tea-ware.

正面から見た「寝室」と「次の間」。襖をあけ放つと広々した空間が
現れる。余計な家具を置いていないから余計に広く感じられるが
実際にはもっとこまごましたものが配置されていたのだろう。

The bed room and the next room beyond it observed from
the front. When the sliding doors are opened, there appears
a spacious room. As there are minimum furniture, the room
looks larger; in the real life of Fumiko's family, there must have
been disposed many more goods.

「茶の間」。中央に据えられた座卓が如何にも立派である。

A living room. In the middle of it is a fine wooden low table.

廊下と水屋。柱と、廊下の床板にも注目した。決して裕福だった
わけではなかろうが、よく手入れされ黒光りしている。

at the wood of the corridor and pillars which are polished.
Fumiko's family was not prosperous but their house was very
well taken care of.

同上。僅かに右奥の床の間が見えるように撮影した。

The same living room (above). I took the photo with a
slightly different angle so that another hanging scroll
could be seen.

庭の植栽。/ Plants in the garden.

あちこちに配置された手水石（つくばい）。

One of the stone washbasins disposed here and there in
the garden.

庭の灯籠と手水石。/ A stone garden lantern and a washbasin.

小間（客間兼）。玄関脇の小部屋。主に芙美子の母が使用。書生や訪問客のいる時は、客間として供された。

Fumiko's mother used it mainly. Sometimes male students
and visitors were admitted here.

庭の片隅に配された地蔵石。小さな花入れが添えられている。

庭の奥から母屋へと続く踏み石。庭はうっそうと茂り、武蔵野の雑木林を思わせる。

Stepping stones placed from a bush in the garden toward the main
house buildings. The bush reminds us of Musashino woods.

ここにも手水石。/ Here is another washbasin.

細長い池には金魚が泳いでいる。芙美子のいた頃のもの
とは思えないが、地形に合わせた清々しい一角だ。

Gold fish are swimming in a narrow pond. They don't
seem to be the ones Fumiko lived with, but this corner
is clean and fresh suitable for the landscape.

木々の間からのぞく平屋の家屋。盛夏にはさぞセミの音が賑やかだろう。

The flat main building of the estate seen among the trees.
Presumably cicadas must be noisy in summer time.

左側にアトリエの入り口が見える。現在は展示室。

The entrance into the atelier can be seen on the left side.
It is now an exhibition room.

展示室となっているアトリエ（奥）。手前は石蔵ギャラリー。
（この日は公開されていなかった。）

庭の大樹。/A huge tree in the middle of the garden.

ハイマツ。花も豊かだが、常緑樹も見事。

Dwarf Siberian pine (?) Evergreen trees as well as flowers are
abundant in this garden.

玄関脇の竹。この庭には松も竹も多い。

Bamboo beside the entrance hall. There are several kinds of
pine trees and bamboos in this garden.

なんとも残念なことに、芙美子の書斎の写真を撮りそこなった。
貴重なその部屋の写真を撮るためだけにでも、是非ここを再訪
したいと思う。

To my disappointment, I missed to take photos of
Fumiko's study. I will visit the house again just to
take the precious shot.
