YOUNG WRITER'S WORKSHOP

The University of Virginia's WRITERS WORKSHOP 1997 is described as "a place to take yourself seriously as a writer and grow as a person and as a n artist." "(It was) established in 1982, brings together a community of writers with a common purpose--to create a supportive and noncompetitive environment where teenagers can live and work as artists. Every staff member has a commitment to writing. The faculty, professional authors interested in developing new talent, bring practical experience to the workshop setting. The counselors are graduates and undergraduates in related to fields which allow them to broaden our instructional program. The administrators, also writers, are dedicated to nurturing the artistic vision. The Writers Workshop , housed on the historic gounds of the University of Virginia, using the resources of a great institution--currently the home of Poet Laureate Rita Dove--to provide a comprehensive program for talented young writers" says the brochure for applicants.

These are the photos of the day when I was invited to one of the elective classes of "Young Writer's Workshop." I talked on Japanese tradition of Haiku. The teenage potential American young writers helped me find my own linguistic/cultural identity. I wrote a short essay on the day's experience under the title of "Sound and Silence."
